COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 12, 2012 – Seminarians from the only Pontifical College in the U.S. have an awe-inspiring approach for confronting abortion head-on. Dressed in full regalia of a black cassock, a traditional red sash, and armed with a rosary, the seminarians descend in a powerful show of force every Saturday on a local abortion facility to confront with prayer what the seminary’s rector calls the “poison of abortion.”

Father James Wehner, rector of the Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, says he believes that seminarians need to “see visibly the forces of evil at work, and respond with an act of faith in which prayer becomes the greater force.”

“American culture is a blessing, but it is also poisoned,” he said. “The clergy, particularly priests, need to be able to confront that poison, not run away and hide from it. That means we have to confront it head-on.”

Imagine if they spent every Saturday running a free child care facility, or volunteering at a women’s shelter, or spending time with kids in the foster care system. Imagine if they stood like this outside their congressional rep’s office, demanding accountability for childhood disease and poverty. Imagine if they cared about people who were already born, instead of being judgmental of people exercising their legal and medical right.

For exposing a miracle, a man will be thrown in jail.

This is Sanal Edamaruku, President of the Rationalist International - a group that seeks to end superstition, promote an open society and endorse scientific method amongst others.

On 10th March, Sanal was invited by a TV channel to investigate a “miraculous crucifix” in front of the Church of Our Lady of Velankanni, India. This crucifix had become the center of attraction drawing believers from far and wide. For some days, there were little droplets of water trickling from Jesus’ feet. Hundreds of people came daily to pray and collect the “holy water” in bottles.

After careful investigation, Sanal identified the drainage near a washing room as the source of the water, it reached Jesus feet through capillary action. (And I won’t even comment on implications. Drainage, really now?)

In a live program, Sanal explained his findings and accused the Catholic Church officials  of miracle mongering, as they were very aggressive in PR measures, even distributing photographs certifying the “miracle”.

The Church, obviously, got pissed.

Fr. Augustine Palett, the priest of Our Lady of Velankanni, and representatives of the Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC) demanded that Sanal apologize. Sanal refused and engaged them in a debate in live TV instead. Most of which was spent by Church leaders berating Sanal. As if volume was directly proportional to sense.

For not bowing down to their demands, they filed a blasphemy case against him.  On the 10th April, Sanal received a  phone call from a police official  directing him to come to the police station to face the charges. He will be arrested for “hurting the religious sentiments of a particular community”.

Sanal Edamaruku is now under threat of arrest for exposing the “miracle” of dripping crucifix.

This is why blasphemy laws are ridiculous. So it’s o-kay to delude people with a “miracle” because exposing them is “hurtful to religious sentiments”? Blasphemy laws are a serious affront to the freedom of expression!

Are these the kind of people that you want running your charity? Theists still say, after all this: But some religious charities do good things. Yes it is true but does “some good charity work,” justify or make religion good overall? You decide:

I could list over 100 specific religious atrocities but here are a few, rape, torture, murder, war, ethnic cleansing, genocide, slavery, segregation, racism, discrimination, bigotry, hate, oppression, abuse, child rape/abuse/molestations, war on science, war on education, war on medicine, war on knowledge, war on inquiry, war on history, war on technology, war on human rights, war on women, war on the LGBT community, war on freedom, and the list goes on and on.

Religious leaders have done each of these things throughout time as well as today. They have done those things hundreds, thousands, and some, millions of times. The thousands of religious leaders who have done these things, do them because they do not believe the religion (including the man-invented gods and man-written scripture) that they sell to the public; so why should anyone? It discredits their product. All religion is a lie and an evil business empire. Yes, evil. The word has been defined by organized religion.

The catholic church could open one of their gold vaults, with money and gold stacked as far as the eye can see and they could help every single poor person in the world. They could totally eliminate poverty forever. The cost to them would be equivalent to a tenth of a penny when compared to an average person. This will never happen because they are selfish. The helpless, poor, sick, needy, homeless, poverty-stricken, suffering, uneducated, and downtrodden people (especially of third-world nations) are easily exploitable and give the church the power of the majority. Helping these poor people just enough to keep most of them breathing, raises the church up in a false light as the church steps on their heads. Without all that human misery and suffering, the church would become less important and needed. The church would have less power and no cheap public relation tools. They wouldn’t have anything to make people turn their head, close their eyes and plug their ears of all the extreme church wrong-doings, injustices, atrocities and their true motives would come to light. Without poverty, there would be one less big arguing point of the church’s relevance in our new day and age.

Fundamentalists make up around 20-30% of christians and it is higher in muslim theocracies. These fundamentalists are the leaders of most branches of both religions. The “liberal and moderate” majority are to blame just as much as the fundamentalists. They stand by and allow their religions to be run by fundamentalists. Many of them defend fundamentalists and most damming; they fund their fundamentalist leaders through tithing and donations. I recall listening to a talk by a sociologist who was investigating domestic violence support in churches. Most ministers told victims to pray about it and look into what a biblical marriage should be.

Controversy grows after Catholic priests try to starve a colony of feral cats residing on the grounds St. James Church in lower Manhattan.

The small colony of eight feral cats at the historic St. James Church had not been fed for almost two weeks after Father Lino Gonsalves and Father Walter Tonelotto locked out colony caretakers. Adding insult to injury, church groundskeepers threatened to poison the colony of cats.

Needless to say, cat lovers, animal rights activists, and humanitarians were up in arms, writing letters, sending emails, and making phone calls protesting the inhumane treatment of the cats by church clergy and staff.

On Thursday, in an apparent attempt at damage control, the Archdiocese of NYC agreed to meet with the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals on Tuesday, March 27, to discuss the situation. In addition, caretakers were allowed to feed the very hungry cats.

Previously the priests refused to meet with the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals to discuss any plan for cat care, even though caretakers were willing to address any concerns the church may have for security or hygiene.

Out of the Cage! The blog for the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals reports:

The cats are all neutered and vaccinated, following the guidelines of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), the only proven effective and humane method for controlling feral cat populations. Until now, St. James’ feral colony was a model TNR project for which the church could be credited with humane leadership by example. This recent public banishment of the cats sends a very cruel signal to others facing the decision of how to approach feral cat management.

Jane Hoffman, President of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, said:

“We can only imagine what the Holy Father, who himself lovingly tended to his feral cat colonies, would think about this situation. As a Roman Catholic, I am saddened and appalled by this attack on eight of God’s little creatures.”

(The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, is known to adore feral cats, and has defended their care on the grounds at the Vatican.)

PITTSBURGH - A central Pennsylvania church has subjected members of a youth group to a mock kidnapping and interrogations without telling them it was staged. The mother of one 14-year-old girl has filed a complaint with police.

The pastor of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Middletown says the church is “so saddened” the girl was traumatized on Wednesday. Pastor John Lanza said Friday there have been emails of support from other students because the intent of the raid was to prepare them for what they might encounter as missionaries overseas. He says the mock kidnappers included an off-duty police officer and a retired Army captain.

The mock kidnappers covered the students’ heads, put them in a van and questioned them.

Police are investigating and have declined to comment.

The trial of Pastor James Nana Akwasi Agyemang, leader of Shiva Linga Church based in Abidjan who allegedly defiled eight girls and absconded, began at an Accra High Court on Wednesday.

Stephen Yaw Pepera, father of three of the victims, mounted the witness box to narrate circumstances leading to Pastor Agyemang’s arrest.

Pepera, first prosecution witness and member of the church, told the court that the accused never took his children, as promised, to school, but only sexually abused them.

Led in evidence by Evelyn Keelson, Principal State Attorney, Pepera said he and the accused were engaged in the sale of herbal medicines, stressing that the accused paid him accordingly, and he preached anytime the accused was out of Abidjan.

The witness said because he and Agyemang worked together, the accused promised to take care of three of his children in Ghana so they could attend good schools.

Pepera said in 2006, the accused told him that he wanted to run an orphanage and wanted some of his (Pepra) children to live with him at his house at Saint John’s in Accra.

Pastor Agyemang told him that he wanted only girls to live in his house at St John’s and that he would include boys later.

The witness said one of the victims however returned to Abidjan after visiting the accused in Ghana, and informed Mary Anaglatey, a mother of two of the victims, about the ordeal the children were going through.

Mary in turn told Pepera about the victim’s claims, adding that after returning to Abidjan, the victim realised that she was urinating often and that her panties always attracted flies.

Mary told him that she suspected that the victim was suffering from candidiasis, hence decided to treat her with boiled water.

The witness said Mary however inspected the victim’s vagina and realised that she was not suffering from candidiasis, but had rather been defiled.

Pepera said to confirm the victim’s story, he, together with Mary, called her and she told them of her plight and that of the other victims.

He then called Bismark Sarpong, driver of the accused, to allow him to speak to his two daughters in Ghana.

Pepera said his children confirmed the matter and pleaded with him to come for them or else they would die.

The children told him that the accused had threatened them not to inform anyone about their ordeal or else they would become mad, and threatened them with dreadful pictures of some deities.

“When I asked Sarpong whether he was aware of what the accused had been doing to the victims, he denied any knowledge,” the witness said.

Pepera said when the accused returned to Abidjan and was confronted, he denied ever defiling any of the eight children.

Pastor Agyemang claimed that because he had commented on the alleged divorce of Archbishop Duncan Williams, he was being harassed by the public.

The witness said the accused noted that because people were peddling lies that he had defiled the victims, the police and journalists were after him.

After listening to the accused person’s excuses, the witness said he and Mary Anaglatey went to Ghana and lodged a complaint with the police.

“Following the report, the accused was arrested and put before court, granted bail but escaped. I vowed to look for him but did not succeed,” the witness said.

Pepra said he had heard about ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and therefore approached him to help arrest the accused.

“I suffered before reaching Anas but through his efforts the accused was arrested at Sunyani,” he said.

During cross-examination by Victor Kwadwoga Adawudu, counsel for the accused, the witness denied being an associate pastor of the accused.

He maintained that he got to know the accused through Sarpong.

The accused, who is facing eight counts of defilement, pleaded not guilty and was remanded into police custody.

He escaped after being granted bail in 2007, but was nabbed with the assistance of ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The case has been adjourned to Monday, March 26.
